Immersive Citizens – AI Overhaul
It’s no secret that the NPCs of Skyrim can be a little dumb, and if you’ve always wanted a more immersive experience where the AI is just a little smarter and can react to you in a more realistic manner, the Immersive Citizens mod is a great one to check out. It greatly improves their behavior, and also makes them feel more dynamic as a result.
Diverse Dragons Collection
As it is, the dragon enemies of Skyrim are already impressive enough. Yet, the Diverse Dragons Collection mod expands the universe even more by introducing a whole ton of new dragon types you can encounter in the open-world. They all come with unique models and textures, and can really help to spice up subsequent playthroughs.
Relationship Dialogue Overhaul
Let’s be real. The relationships you can forge in Skyrim are kinda lackluster at best. The Relationship Dialogue Overhaul mod solves that problem, or at the very least alleviates it by introducing tons of new voiced lines to really expand the kinds of conversations you can have with the NPCs in-game. NPCs will have much more to say to you in-game, and they’ll actually feel more like people, and less like robots.
Divine Cities – Premier City Overhaul
The towns and settlements of vanilla Skyrim look pretty damn good, but no one’s gonna say no to them looking even more impressive, right? That’s what the Divine Cities mod aims to do. This mod is seriously impressive in that there’s so much more detail to admire in the major towns, along with overhauled flora and fauna, new pet companions to discover, and just more life overall.
Enhanced Nights
It sounds simple, but once you have it installed, you’ll never go back. The Enhanced Nights mod makes the night skies of Skyrim look even more beautiful. Stars are brighter, the aurora borealis looks even more romantic than usual, and the best part is that it works well with most other night mods you might already have installed.
Sacrosanct – Vampires of Skyrim
If you’ve always felt like the vampiric features of Skyrim have been kinda disappointing, then Sacrosanct is definitely the mod to get. This mod allows vampires access to a whole host of new abilities and progression mechanics, including being able to expend blood to resurrect themselves and using spoken commands to force others to do their bidding.
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch
Bethesda made good strides fixing up bugs and glitches, but those minor patches don’t last. Naturally, it’s up to modders to complete the job, which comes in the form of the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch.
I recommend this mod to everyone, even if you don’t use mods. Having it just makes Skyrim far more stable. And the best part? Most mods are compatible with it, so you’ll rarely have to deal with a conflict.
Let’s Ride Durnehviir
Durnehviir is arguably one of the coolest dragons in Skyrim. Not only is he an undead dragon, he’s a necromancer. How metal is that? You even get a dragon shout to summon him in battle, but what if you could do more than that?
With the Let’s Ride Durnehviir mod, you gain the ability to do exactly what the mod says: you get to ride Durnehviir! Right after he teaches you the last part of the Soul Tear shout, you’ll learn the shout. If by chance you already did that, don’t worry—the shout is automatically added.
Disable Combat Boundary
Skyrim is, in many ways, drastically different from Oblivion. One of the smallest changes that most never took notice of is that enemies won’t follow you through boundaries, like cave openings and doors. Anything that requires Skyrim to load in a new cell, enemies can’t pass through. The Disable Combat Boundary mod removes that restriction entirely so you can’t abuse that system!
Blackthorn, A Buildable Town in the Rift
The Hearthfire DLC was a step in the right direction for players to construct their own home, but it always felt it only scratched the surface. The Blackthorn mod made me realize what was missing: an entire town to build. Blackthorn is yours to customize, from weapon racks to merchant; in fact, the available options are more to the tune of over 400.
Goblins
I have nothing witty to say about goblins; I just want them back in the game. I’ve missed the little boogers since the days of Oblivion, and it seems a little odd that none show up in Skyrim. With the Goblins mod, which you can download using Creation Club, you even get one as a companion. Long live Gogh!
Immersive Patrols
Soon after your journey begins in Skyrim, you hear this talk of civil war between the Stormcloaks and Imperial Legion, but it never really feels like one. Immersive Patrols aims to make Skyrim actually feel like there’s a war going on by adding roving packs of Stormcloaks, Thalmor, Imperials, and Dawnguard, among others.
It isn’t just window dressing, though. These groups will interact with one and an all out fight can break out. If you end up choosing a side, say, with the Imperial, Stormcloaks will even attack you! Ultimately, Skyrim feels much more lively with this mod, and I’m all for it.
Common Clothes and Armors
Why does everyone look like they shop at the same three merchants in Skyrim? Pick any NPC from a crowd and they’ll either be dressed as a dirty farmer, in full armor, or they came straight from the Cloud District.
The Common Clothes and Armors mod adds far more variety for you to wear, as well as NPCs. You can even craft some! My personal favorites are the “salvaged” armor sets, which only include portions of the armor, but with leather or chain to fill out the rest. It gives your Dragonborn a real adventurer’s look.
True Storms Special Edition
I love atmosphere just as much as I love immersion, and the True Storms mod is thick with atmosphere. While the weather in vanilla Skyrim is good, I wouldn’t mind a little more. This mod adds more variance to the weather, yet still retains that vanilla experience. The storms outside hit a lot differently when you can actually hear it from inside your home. And don’t get me started on the heavy dust storms on Solstheim!
Even Better Quest Objectives
How often have you caught yourself wondering about Skyrim because of a bad quest objective? You can’t exactly rely on your journal, either. Hey, it happens to all of us, and it’d be nice to get some directions.
The Even Better Quest Objectives affects over 200 quests and their quest markers, making it a lot easier to figure out where you’re headed. With that said, some of the quests related to riddles are left as is as that would defeat the purpose of the riddle.
DIRGE, the Roleplaying Overhaul
You’ve been to High Hrothgar dozens of times, clocked in hundreds of hours in Skyrim, and now it’s time for a change. If you want to keep most of the aesthetic of Skyrim, but drastically change the game, the DIRGE mod is for you.
DIRGE massively overhauls Skyrim to the point that it feels like an entirely new game. For example, combat feels deadlier. Enemies aren’t just harder to kill, but are far more intelligent. Skills and perks were rebalanced and improved, and even Standing Stones have returned to their rightful place as Birthsigns, which provide their own bonuses.
